Has the scream been silenced?

The world might have lost a huge master-piece. After being stolen, it now seems that "The Scream" have been lost - for good. Why someone would first steal this master-piece and then destroy it - I do not get. You steal it for the money or for the art. In both cases, destroying the piece works against this.
